Helping Hand Program

A Helping Hand is a volunteer that is assigned to a teacher or a group of teachers. This volunteer typically comes once a week during school hours on a prearranged day and time, decided upon by the teacher and volunteer. Some of the tasks that a volunteer might be asked to do are as follows:

Copying/Laminating/Cutting Out Laminations, etc.:

Make requested copies of classroom materials. Sort copies or workbooks. Staple or assemble copies. Laminate and/or cut laminated items out. Training on machines is provided.

Work in the Library:

Help the librarian by assisting students with checking books in and out. Help shelve book. Help repair and clean library books.

Teacher/Classroom Support:

The type of support requested varies per school and teacher. You may be asked to help during centers or listening to children read. It might also include helping out in a STEM or Art class. You may be asked to work on special projects.

Special Talents:

If you have a talent you would like to share, please mark it on the application. Example: great at art, graphic design, music, certified in an area, etc. For more information about the Helping Hands Program call Dianna Mann, Volunteer Programs Coordinator, at 405-354-3716.

Miller Mentor Program

Parents, community members and business personnel are encouraged to become a Miller Mentor in our school based program. Mentors are positive role models who commit to spending 30 minutes once a week, during school hours, with an individual student for the entire school year. Mentors and their mentee spend time each week building a positive relationship, playing games, eating a snack, crafts, coloring, listening, and providing support. Training is provided. This is truly a life changing program for those that can commit to investing their time and attention into a student. Mentor training is provided.

Students needing to have a mentor are identified by counselors and teachers in our schools. Parents may also request a mentor for their child. For more information about the Miller Mentor Program call Dianna Mann, Volunteer Programs Coordinator, at 405-354-3716.

Vision & Hearing Screening

YPS has committed to screening students at every school from PreK-5th grade (6th-12th grade on referral only), to ensure that students have good vision and hearing for learning in the classroom. Volunteers screen students' vision or hearing under the direction of district nurses and coordinators. Training provided. You can choose if you'd like to be trained as a vision screener, hearing screener or both.

Screening run from mid-September to mid-October. The schedule is flexible. You choose the day(s), time(s) and the school(s) you wish to volunteer at. We begin screening students when their school day begins and it ends when the last student has been screened, typically around noon. This is a huge and important undertaking so we are always looking for volunteers! For more information about the Vision & Hearing Program call Dianna Mann, Volunteer Programs Coordinator, at 405-354-2716.
